Rare Antique Hodegetria Virgin Mary and Child with Saint Aloysius (reverse side) Pendant. Hodegetria is translated "She who shows the Way," an iconic depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus at her side while pointing to Him as the source of salvation for humankind. The Virgin's head is tilting toward the Child, who raises his hand in a blessing gesture. In the this type of icon is sometimes called Our Lady of the Way. Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was Italian, and became a member of the Society of Jesus. He died as a result of caring for the victims of a serious epidemic, as depicted on the medal with the skull. He was canonized in 1726. The medal size is 1.7 X 2.7 cm, and hangs from an 18 elongated rope pattern chain, 14/20 gold filled, with two drop bicone beads. You can see the wear of the medal relief images due to its wear over the decades, but is still in good condition.
