Item No. A200.107
Italy, c. 1955
This medal is hand-crafted, in the time-honored small batch technique of vitreous enameling, made popular in Europe in the mid-century. Glass is fused onto silver, with the brightness of the silver shining through the colored glass with an etherial, light-through-stained-glass appearance. This medal has two tones of bleu, with the medal itelf in the center. The Miraculous Medal was introduced to the world by St. Catherine Labouré, a novice with the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul in France. In 1830 she received a vision from Mary in which Our Lady appeared inside an oval frame which bore the inscription “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
Medal is .8 inches in height, .65 inches wide. It's a silver-blue backdrop with royal blue accents against raised silver. Bleu is the holiest color and the color of Mary since 200 AD. This medal hangs from a 1mm wheat chain in silver - choose from 16, 18, and 20 inches in length. See photos for detail. Both the medal and chain are 925 silver and have a rhodium coating to resist tarnishing. Note that since medal is glass, it can crack or chip if dropped or mishandled. Please use care.
