RARE, one-of-a-kind - "New" with tags from original artisan

Beautifully preserved, large medal of Joan of Arc, 1 inch in diameter not including bale.  On the front is Joan of Arc in profile.  Reverse is the Basilique de Joan de Arc.  Domrémy, the Saint's birthplace, was renamed Domrémy-la-Pucelle after Joan's nickname, la Pucelle d'Orléans ("the Virgin of Orléans").   Joan of Arc became a saint in 1920.  Because she is not shown as a saint on this medal, we believe the medal pre-dates her canonization.  Also, During WWI, many soldiers and their wives wore medals in her honor.  This is likely one of these WWI medals.  Born in medieval times, Joan of Arc had a vision from God for her to lead France to victory in its long-running war with England.  With no military training, Joan convinced the embattled crown prince Charles of Valois to allow her to lead a French army to the besieged city of Orléans, where it achieved a momentous victory over the English and their French allies, the Burgundians. After seeing the prince crowned King Charles VII, Joan was captured by Anglo-Burgundian forces, tried for witchcraft and heresy and burned at the stake in 1431, at the age of 19.  By the time she was officially canonized in 1920, the Maid of Orléans (as she was known) had long been considered one of history’s greatest heroines, and an enduring symbol of French unity and nationalism.

The size of this medal is exactly one inch without bale.  Choose between 18 inch or 20 inch gold filled chain.

Trésors blue are pieces of French art and devotion.  Also known as "Médailles De Pelerinage" or "Medals of Pilgrimage," these medals have had voyages from another generation, another life, another country.  People of faith still undertake pilgrimages as a way of deepening their religious devotion, seeking miracles, spiritual healing, forgiveness, or for the journey itself.  The experience is not solely about reaching the end, it is about what is endured, enjoyed, and learned along the way.

All trésors bleu are pre-packaged for gifting. Free First Class Shipping in the U.S.
